Canadas immigration backlog reduces by 29,000 since October

It was announced late last year that Canada was sitting on a backlog of 1.8 million applications, predominantly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Figures show that this figure still remains almost the same as of February 2022, due to the fact that some programs have a reduced backlog, but others have increased.

According to data from IRCC obtained by CIC News, the backlog for permanent residency has reduced by 29,000 since October. 25,000 of these applications have been processed through the economic class, the largest single decrease during this time.

IRCC are beginning to increase processing times for those applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP). Previously they were processing an average of 150 applications per week, however this has greatly increased to an average of 800 per week.

The statistics do not show the same positive signs for other pathways, including the caregiver pilot programs, HCCP and HSWP. The inventory for these programs has increased from 12,539 as of December 15th 2021, to 16,085 as of February 1st – an increase of 3,546. This increase can largely be explained by the fact that both the Home Child Care Provider and Home Support Worker pilots reopened on January 1st for 2022 applications. The HCCP was subsequently closed on 17th January due to meeting the quota of 2750.
